Foundations of Computation: Part 1 of 1

This series traces the evolution of computing from early calculation systems through mechanical and electronic computation to modern operating systems and infrastructure, focusing on how tools, constraints, and design decisions shape each stage. Computing can be understood as a method for representing and transforming state, where each technological shift changes the mechanism but not the underlying problem of structuring information so it can be processed, stored, and communicated reliably. Each article in this series examines a stage in that progression, showing how new approaches emerge from the limitations of earlier ones and evolve through layers of representation, abstraction, and constraint.

I’ve programmed in BASIC, C++, Intel Assembly, Bash, Perl, and Python over time. My earliest exposure to computing came in the early 1980s on systems like Commodore and Apple machines before later moving into IBM PC–compatible platforms.

That experience sits inside a broader shift in computing history: the movement from direct, low-level interaction with machines toward layered abstraction through operating systems, development environments, and programming models.

Modern computing hides most of its internal structure behind interfaces and frameworks. Yet those layers are built on decades of technical constraints and design decisions. Understanding modern systems requires tracing how those layers formed.

Many modern software problems are easier to understand when you recognize that today’s systems are built on solutions designed decades ago under very different hardware constraints.


What Is Computation?

Computation is not defined by computers.

It is defined by the structured manipulation of state.

Before electronic systems existed, humans already performed computation using symbolic notation and external tools. Mathematical procedures, bookkeeping methods, and measurement systems all served as ways of representing information and applying repeatable transformations to it.

Over time, these procedures became formalized into repeatable rules. Rules were defined for how information could be represented, how operations could be applied, and how intermediate results could be preserved.

Computation is fundamentally about transforming representations of information. The device performing the transformation is secondary.

Viewed this way, the history of computing is a progression in how state is encoded, stored, and manipulated, not simply a sequence of increasingly powerful machines.


Why We Must Step Back

Computing systems are often introduced from the perspective of modern usage: applications, graphical interfaces, cloud services, and operating systems. While useful for practical learning, this approach hides how deeply those systems depend on earlier models of computation.

Before electronic computers existed, computation already had structured forms in physical and mechanical systems. These earlier approaches defined how information could be represented, manipulated, and preserved outside the human mind.

These systems established the foundations for several ideas that remain central today:

  • externalized memory
  • repeatable procedures
  • structured state representation
  • mechanized transformation of information

When studying modern computing systems, it helps to mentally separate three layers:
representation → procedure → execution mechanism.

Modern computers combine these layers in electronic form, but the conceptual structure existed long before digital machines.

To understand modern computing architecture, we need to step back and examine the earlier systems that defined these ideas.


Early Calculation Systems

The earliest computation systems were physical tools designed to extend human reasoning and memory.

These devices allowed humans to store intermediate results, track quantities, and perform repeatable operations without relying entirely on mental calculation.

Examples include:

  • abacus-based calculation systems
  • counting rods and tally systems
  • ledger bookkeeping methods
  • written arithmetic procedures

These tools did not automate calculation, but they provided a structured environment for computation.

The most important shift introduced by these tools was the externalization of memory. Instead of holding every intermediate value mentally, information could be represented in a physical system.

Computation becomes scalable when intermediate state can exist outside the human mind.

This concept remains fundamental to modern computing systems. Memory structures—whether physical, mechanical, or electronic—allow complex processes to be decomposed into manageable steps.


Representation of Information

Every computing system must answer a foundational question:

How is information represented in a form that can be manipulated?

Early calculation systems relied on physical representations of numbers. Beads on an abacus, marks on counting rods, and entries in ledgers all functioned as external memory structures.

These representations made it possible to:

  • break complex calculations into smaller steps
  • preserve intermediate results
  • verify and repeat procedures

Over time, the representation of information became increasingly abstract.

The development of positional number systems allowed numbers to be represented compactly while still preserving meaning through digit placement. Written arithmetic procedures defined how those representations could be transformed through operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

This separation between representation and procedure is one of the earliest conceptual foundations of computing.

  • Representation stores state
  • Procedure defines how that state changes

The power of computation comes from separating data representation from the rules used to manipulate it.

Modern computers follow the same structure. Data structures represent information, while algorithms define how that information is transformed.

Although the underlying mechanisms have changed—from beads and marks to electronic memory—the relationship between representation and transformation remains constant.


Mechanical Computation

Mechanical computing systems introduced automation into calculation.

Instead of humans performing every step manually, machines could execute structured arithmetic operations using physical mechanisms such as gears, wheels, and levers.

Important early machines included:

  • Pascal’s mechanical calculator (Pascaline)
  • Leibniz’s stepped reckoner
  • other gear-based arithmetic devices

These machines demonstrated that computation could be delegated to a machine performing repeatable procedures.

Mechanical computers proved that calculation is a process that can be mechanized, not just a mental activity.

This period introduced tensions that still shape computing design today:

  • specialized machines vs. general-purpose systems
  • physical constraints vs. logical abstraction
  • hardware limitations vs. desired computational capability

Mechanical systems made automated calculation possible, but they were limited by the physical complexity required to implement each new function.

As a result, most mechanical machines were built for specific mathematical tasks rather than general computation.


Analog Computation Systems

Analog computation represents values using continuous physical quantities rather than discrete symbols.

Instead of numbers being represented as digits, they may be encoded as:

  • electrical voltage
  • mechanical rotation
  • fluid pressure
  • physical displacement

Analog computers were widely used in engineering and scientific modeling during the early and mid-20th century.

Typical applications included:

  • scientific modeling
  • engineering simulation
  • navigation and control systems
  • predictive physical modeling

Because analog systems represent values continuously, they are well suited for modeling natural phenomena.

Analog systems often mirror the physical processes they simulate, making them powerful tools for real-world modeling.

However, analog computation also has limitations.

Small variations in physical components can introduce error, and increasing precision becomes difficult. Unlike digital systems, analog devices cannot easily scale accuracy through additional representation.

Analog systems model reality well but struggle with precise, repeatable computation.

These limitations eventually pushed computing development toward digital systems.


Digital and Electronic Computation

The shift to electronic computing introduced digital representation.

Digital systems represent information using discrete states, most commonly through binary values.

In electronic circuits, binary values are typically implemented using voltage levels:

  • high voltage → logical 1
  • low voltage → logical 0

Using only two states simplifies hardware design. Physical systems can reliably distinguish between two signal levels far more easily than multiple levels.

From these simple states, more complex operations can be constructed using Boolean logic.

Logical functions such as:

  • AND
  • OR
  • NOT

can be implemented using electronic circuits. These primitive operations can then be combined to perform arithmetic calculations and decision-making processes.

Binary logic allows complex computation to be built from extremely simple electronic components.

Digital representation also provides several advantages:

  • precision
  • repeatability
  • scalability
  • reliable storage

Once information is encoded as binary values, the same hardware can represent many different kinds of information simply by interpreting the bits differently.

Binary sequences may represent:

  • numbers
  • program instructions
  • text
  • images
  • audio data

In digital systems, meaning is not inherent in the bits themselves. Meaning comes from how software interprets those bits.

This separation between physical signal and logical interpretation is one of the defining features of modern computing systems.


Early Electronic Computers

The development of early electronic computers marked the transition from special-purpose machines to programmable computing systems.

Notable early systems included machines such as ENIAC and UNIVAC I.

These machines introduced several architectural innovations that remain foundational today:

  • stored-program architecture
  • separation of data and instructions
  • general-purpose computation

In earlier machines, wiring or physical configuration often determined what a machine could do. Changing the computation meant physically modifying the machine.

Stored-program systems changed this model.

Programs could be stored in memory alongside data, allowing the machine to load and execute different instructions without hardware modification.

The stored-program concept transformed computers from fixed calculators into programmable systems.

This architectural shift laid the foundation for modern computer design, operating systems, and software development.


Human Computers and Hybrid Systems

Before electronic automation became widespread, large computational projects often relied on teams of people known as human computers.

These individuals performed structured calculations by following standardized procedures.

Work was typically organized into computation pipelines, where each person completed a specific stage of a larger calculation.

Characteristics of these systems included:

  • structured manual workflows
  • division of computational labor
  • verification and error-checking stages
  • human-machine hybrid computation

Human computers were widely used in fields such as:

  • astronomy
  • physics
  • aerospace engineering

In many cases, mechanical calculators or early electronic devices were used alongside human operators.

Machines performed arithmetic operations while humans coordinated workflows, verified results, and interpreted outputs.

Computation is a process that can involve humans, machines, or both.

This perspective highlights that computing systems are fundamentally about structured information processing, not simply about electronic hardware.


Encoding and Representation Systems (ASCII)

As digital computing expanded, a new challenge emerged: how to represent text and symbols consistently across different machines.

Without a standard encoding system, two computers could interpret the same binary data differently.

To solve this problem, standardized character encoding schemes were developed.

One of the most influential was the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII).

ASCII defines a mapping between characters and numeric values, allowing letters, digits, punctuation, and control symbols to be encoded as binary data.

In its standard form, ASCII uses 7 bits, allowing for 128 possible character values.

These include:

  • uppercase and lowercase letters
  • digits
  • punctuation symbols
  • control characters for formatting and communication

ASCII demonstrated that human-readable text can be represented as structured binary data.

This concept enabled computers to process documents, transmit messages, and store text in standardized formats.

Later encoding systems expanded these ideas to support additional languages and larger character sets.

Even today, ASCII remains deeply embedded in modern computing systems. Many programming languages, communication protocols, and file formats still rely on ASCII-compatible representations.


Emergence of System Classification

As computing technology advanced, machines began to diverge into different categories based on size, cost, and intended usage.

Three major classes emerged:

  • mainframe computers
  • minicomputers
  • microcomputers

Mainframes were large centralized systems designed to serve many users simultaneously.

Minicomputers introduced smaller machines that organizations could deploy within departments or laboratories.

Microcomputers eventually brought computing power to individual users, dramatically expanding access to computing technology.

These categories reflect different strategies for allocating computational resources and managing system access.

The emergence of these categories marked a turning point in computing history.

Instead of a single evolutionary path, computing began to branch into distinct system families, each optimized for different environments and workloads.


Summary

At this stage in the story, the foundational elements of modern computing are in place: mechanical calculation, electronic logic, encoding standards, and early system classification.

Each layer introduces a new method for representing and manipulating information. The progression moves from physical mechanisms to symbolic representation and finally to electronic digital systems capable of performing complex transformations at scale.

This evolution is not simply an increase in computational power. It also represents a growing separation between problem description, data representation, and execution mechanism, allowing computing systems to become increasingly flexible and programmable.

Modern computing systems are the result of many layers of abstraction built over centuries of experimentation with representation and procedure.

As computing matured, different priorities began shaping system design. Performance, accessibility, cost, and usability influenced how computing architectures evolved and who could use them. The next phase examines how these pressures produced distinct computing families and how those differences ultimately shaped modern operating systems and computing environments.
